Salmonella outbreak ruin holidays at the Jaz Mirabel Beach

Sarah Whittle had jetted off to sunny Sharm el Sheikh with her husband and daughter in summer 2014 looking forward to making the most of the five star facilities on offer at Jaz Mirabel Beach.

Unfortunately, within hours of their arrival, the Rochdale holidaymakers soon discovered that five-star the hotel was not.

Speaking to Holiday Illness Claims, mother Sarah details numerous hygiene failings at the resort and expresses disbelief that food was frequently served at unsafe cold or lukewarm temperatures.

Her husband agrees that food safety left a lot to be desired, stating that bread, salad, cheese and meat were always left uncovered and open to contamination by flies.

Then, a mere three days into their family getaway, he was stricken by crippling stomach cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting and nausea.

Despite reporting his illness to several members of hotel staff, the father states that his concerns were met with disregard. Staff just said it was sunstroke and sent me away, telling me to drink plenty, he explains.

However, the hotels account of the situation was soon proved erroneous as more holidaymakers, including Sarah and Amy, began to experience the same agonising illness symptoms. News of the illness outbreak even made it into the UK press at the time.

The family claim that medication obtained in the resort did nothing to ease their symptoms and they remained severely unwell on their return home, contacting their local accident and emergency department once back in the UK.

It was here that hospital tests revealed that the bacterium salmonella was the cause of their suffering. However, this news was little comfort to the trio as their recovery from holiday illness was to prove slow.

Mother Sarah continued to suffer from repeat illness symptoms for a month. Unfortunately, both her husband and daughter are still battling lasting complications after developing food intolerances and post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome respectively.
