£3,000 compensation after holidaymaker contracts cryptosporidium at the Hotel Riviera in Tunisia

Our holiday illness claims team has recently helped a British holidaymaker obtain £3,000 in compensation after contracting cryptosporidium at the Hotel Riviera in Port El Kantaoui, Tunisia.

Christine Niven from Walsall had fallen victim to sickness at the Tunisian hotel suffering symptoms of vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pains and nausea. It was later found that she had suffered gastroenteritis caused by the parasite cryptosporidium.

After returning to the UK Mrs Niven contacted the legal experts at HolidayIllnessClaims and was able to make a successful no win no fee claim for compensation against her tour operator Thomas Cook.

If your Thomas Cook holiday has been ruined by symptoms of illness which lasted for more than 7 days, you too could be entitled to receive compensation. To find out how our experts can help you, call us now on 0800 01 54321.

Couple sufferes Cryptosporidium illness on holiday

Christine Niven’s holiday to the Hotel Riviera in Tunisia was supposed to be special occasion to celebrate her 43rd wedding anniversary with her husband. However, the dream holiday soon became a nightmare when they both fell ill experiencing symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pains, and nausea.

Mr and Mrs Niven reported that many alcoholic drinks at the Hotel Riviera did appear to be watered down. Food and hygiene standards at the hotel were also nowhere near the levels they expected. Food was often served lukewarm or served on more than one occasion.

Christine Niven said of the holiday illness: It did really ruin the holiday to go through such a horrible experience, especially on what should be such a special occasion.

Many of the drinks at the hotel seemed to be watered down and the indoor pool smelt strongly of sewage, which permeated the lift and first floor corridor where we were staying.

We would like to thank Anne for all of her work and support in helping us settle the claim.

Comments on the case from our Head of Travel Law

“Contracting cryptosporidium can leave holidaymakers in danger of falling seriously ill during their holiday.

“Water supplies that have been contaminated with cryptosporidium oocysts can often cause quite severe illness, which is why it is always recommended that holidaymakers drink only bottled water and avoid ice in drinks.

“However, there is also an obligation on behalf the tour operators and hotel management to ensure that guests are not exposed to contaminated drinking or recreational water.”
