Suspected Shigella outbreaks at the Hotel Majestic Colonial in the Dominican Republic

We are concerned to be reading reports on TripAdvisor of a suspected outbreak of shigella at the Hotel Majestic Colonial in Punta Cana.

Guests have reported of falling ill during their stay and suffering with severe symptoms of diarrhoea and sickness.

Many posts to TripAdvisor have revealed that some hotel guests have been diagnosed with shigella. Holidaymakers contacted their GPs upon return to the UK after their symptoms continued to become progressively worse.

The Shigella germ is a family of bacteria that can cause gastroenteritis. Shigella can be contracted from eating or drinking contaminated food and liquids. Shigella are microscopic living creatures that can pass from person to person and there are several different types of Shigella bacteria.

Anne Thomson, Head of Travel Law at Your Holiday Claims said: We have previously been instructed by holidaymakers who experienced gastric illness during their holidays at The Majestic Colonial.  Two of our clients were diagnosed as having contracted a Salmonella infection during their stay.  This again is due to a breakdown in food handling practices and procedures at this hotel.
